"Waterloo Station, London - Suez Crisis -1956"
#6252PP. Dated 1956. American artist, possibly painted in England. Signed "F Ray 66". Oil on board - wooden frame.
Frederic E. Ray, Jr. (2/14/1920-1/23/2001) was best known as the principal Superman cover artist in the 1940s, and he helped shape the defining look of that superhero. His cover of Superman #14 from February 1942 is considered one of comics' most famous. As a comics illustrator, he served as artist of the "Tomahawk" feature by DC Comics for more than 20 years, and he also worked as a commercial illustrator. This painting is apparently from his personal collection. Written on the back of the painting, in the artist's hand: "Waterloo Station, London-Suez Crisis -1956 (from sketches made on the spot)". The painting of a group of British soldiers, probably waiting to deploy to the Suez, is clearly done in the style of an illustrator or comic book artist. A note on the back of the frame says it was purchased at the sale of the artist's estate. Very good condition - minor losses to frame. Height: 22", Width: 17.75". $1,800.00.
