Landscape Paintings by Robert Young Clay
We offer a wide selection of landscape paintings by the late Richmond, Virginia artist Robert Young Clay, mostly painted between 1995 and 2005 with a few more recent.
Robert Young Clay (1936 - 2010) resided in Richmond, Virginia, for his last 35 years. A native of Dixon Springs, Tennessee, he majored in Art at the University of Tennessee in the 1950's. He "paints landscapes, but they come to him through his imagination, not while sitting at some roadside at an easel. Most are at least partly based upon his memories of the Middle Tennessee countryside that he grew up viewing and, given the connection between imagination and memory, are partly literal and partly figurative expressions of his past." 1
In addition to oil landscapes (primarily on canvas), Clay also worked in watercolors, pencil, and pen-and-ink, producing coats-of-arms, snow scenes, and whimsical caricatures of "little old ladies." Over the years, his work was entered in a number of art shows and competitions.
