7926PP. Circa 1832. Paris, France. Oil on Canvas with original stretcher; frame is gold leaf and gilt on gesso on pine. The artist, Jean Louis-Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891), was a leading French classicist painter and sculptor. This portrait was probably painted while he was still a teenager, and is signed lower left. Although the subject is unknown for certain, it has been suggested that it may be Napoleon's mother. Frame appears to be original and has a plaque with the artist's name. More biographical information on the artist available. Both the painting and the frame have had minor repairs during the years, but they are overall in good shape and have an excellent patina.
